Izak9 was invented by Franz Schlindwein, a former school head of maths from Derry. It consists of 27 cubes - with different combinations of colour, number and shape. It is designed to stimulate mathematical thinking and interaction among primary or secondary pupils with the help of animated on-screen characters. It is an immersive, multi-media rich, active learning device designed for use by children in Primary and Post Primary schools and for the delivery of teachers’ personal and professional development training.
These cubes are not just for use in primary schools. Recent Research conducted by Trinity College Dublin and Queen's University Belfast shows how using the Izak9 resource, which encourages pupil interaction, resulted in an increased enjoyment of the subject in first years in post primary schools in the north and Republic.
This workshop will explore the potential benefits that Izak9 can provide for students, teachers and the learning and teaching process in Maths. It will also familiarise principals / teachers with the cubes and how they can be used to enhance the learning experience for the students.
Sligo Education Centre has two sets of these cubes which schools may apply to borrow for use with their students. However only schools which attend this training may apply for the cubes.
