Mindful, Sensory and Creative Activities for Learners with SEN
This engaging and practical summer course offers educators a supportive introduction to regulation and inclusive practice for learners with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Grounded in current understanding of wellbeing and learning, the course explores how calm, predictable and nurturing environments can positively impact student engagement, behaviour and emotional regulation.
Participants will examine the vital role of the adult in co-regulation, alongside the influence of teacher wellbeing on overall classroom climate. Through guided reflection and discussion, educators will be introduced to simple, mindful and sensory-informed practices that can be meaningfully integrated into everyday teaching.
The course also focuses on developing sensory awareness, helping participants understand how sensory needs shape learners’ experiences, participation and behaviour. Practical, accessible strategies for creating sensory-supportive classrooms will be shared and explored.
Creativity is a key theme throughout, with a dedicated module on process-based creative activities that support communication, emotional expression and regulation. Emphasis is placed on inclusion, safety and valuing the process over the final product, ensuring all learners can participate meaningfully.
In addition, participants will explore outdoor and nature-based approaches to learning, considering how school grounds and local environments can enhance wellbeing, engagement and inclusion.
The course concludes with an opportunity for reflection and consolidation, supporting participants to identify realistic, sustainable strategies to apply within their own educational settings.
This course is ideal for teachers and educators seeking practical, evidence-informed approaches to fostering inclusive, supportive and responsive learning environments for all learners.
