Arts-based Environmental Education – learning through Art in the outdoors

This practical Summer course will introduce teachers to arts-based environmental education and its potential for integrated, motivating and memorable learning about biodiversity and the natural world. Teachers will be equipped with ideas and skills to implement creative activities with their students inside and outside the classroom. The course will support delivery of the SESE curriculum, the Visual Arts curriculum and to link with Green Schools programmes and learning for sustainability.

Participants will be equipped with a toolkit of activities and techniques for bringing children outside, (especially in a school ground context), and teaching about biodiversity and the natural environment. Participants will gain ideas for integrating the visual arts with science, history, literacy and environmental education to promote theme-based learning through creative art activities.

The course will involve active learning methodologies throughout the week with opportunities for both classroom-based activities and outdoor experiential learning in the local area through field trips.
